How to Reduce Flakiness in E2E Tests Across Browsers and Devices

Flaky tests are one of the biggest headaches in end to end testing. You fix one test failure only to watch another pop up for no obvious reason. Even worse, the same test might pass in Chrome, fail in Safari, and behave differently on a mobile device. When this happens often enough, teams begin ignoring failures—something that defeats the purpose of automation entirely. But the good news is that flakiness can be reduced with a thoughtful approach and the right tools.

A major cause of flaky tests is timing. Many E2E scripts assume the UI will update instantly, but browsers don’t always behave the same way. Instead of using fixed delays or sleep()—which only mask the issue—rely on smart waits. Frameworks like Cypress, Playwright, and WebdriverIO provide robust auto-waiting mechanisms to ensure elements are ready before interactions happen. This one shift alone dramatically improves reliability.

Selectors play a role too. Fragile selectors such as dynamic IDs or nested elements often break with minor UI changes. Stable, semantic selectors like data-testid offer consistency across browsers and screen sizes. This small tweak helps reduce those unpredictable “element not found” errors.

Another overlooked factor is test data. When multiple tests rely on shared or inconsistent data, flakiness becomes inevitable. Using isolated datasets, resetting states before each test, or mocking external dependencies leads to more predictable outcomes.
